Safer driving thanks to BMW and Rotterdam's Safe Drive Zones pilot project

A safe, healthy and liveable city is high on the agenda of the city of Rotterdam. This calls for a new vision of future mobility in which sustainability, traffic safety, accessibility and traffic flow play an important role. Since 2018, BMW and Rotterdam have been working together to realise these shared ambitions.

Safe Drive Zones pilot
One of the current pilots resulting from the unique collaboration between BMW and the municipality of Rotterdam fits seamlessly with both the fire letter and the Rotterdam approach. "Over 3 years ago we started Electric City Drive in Rotterdam as a precursor to eDrive Zones, the standard we have today to allow BMW plug-in hybrids to automatically switch to fully electric mode as soon as they drive into town. That system is now active in 138 cities across Europe," said Marc Bras, Manager of Mobility Services at BMW Group Netherlands. "However, sustainable mobility is not just about clean air. Safety is just as important in creating liveable cities. Based on the same technology, we are now running 'Safe Drive Zones' in which we investigate whether drivers change their driving behaviour when they are warned about dangerous or busy zones. Think of streets around schools or points with a high concentration of cyclists in traffic. The BMW recognises these zones and shows a (speed) advice on the central display on the dashboard. Besides the potential for greater traffic safety, the reports could possibly make costly adjustments to the physical traffic signs and infrastructure unnecessary."

Intelligent Speed Assistance
Safe Drive Zones not only anticipates the introduction of fixed 30 km/h zones, but also 'Intelligent Speed Assistance' (ISA). A system that, with the help of geofencing (GPS coordinates that form a virtual area recognised by the car), automatically limits the speed on certain stretches of road. From July this year, all new cars in the European Union must be equipped with technology that supports ISA - the actual, legal introduction of these areas in the Netherlands has not yet been determined.
